Athens, a city surrounded by mountains, has also many hills and low mountains even in the city centre, thus many opportunities for magnificent views from above, be it romantic ones at night or bright ones in the morning! Accessed on foot (all of them with some necessary effort though) these are not to be missed city spots.
The Acropolis
Apart from being the number one sightseeing in Greece and one of the top in Europe and the world, the Acropolis is also one of the best places that one can enjoy a fantastic, panoramic view of this city. If you choose to climb up the hill be sure to wear comfortable shoes since it needs some effort, yet the view is certainly worth it.. Apart from the impressive ancient monuments on top of the hill, the Propylaea, the Parthenon Temple, the Temple of Athena Nike, the Herodes Atticus theatre, one can catch a fantastic view of Athens, extending from the mountains surrounding Athens, to the sea.
Lycabettus Hill
Walk (it will need a certain effort though..) drive, or use the cable car from Kolonaki area and you won’t regret it. The view from the top –the highest hill in Athens centre-expands beyond the city and all the way to the sea! It is a year round attraction that offers fantastic, dreamy views while you can also enjoy a coffee or a romantic dinner at the restaurant on the top of the hill and visit the beautiful church of Saint George.
Fillopappou Hill
To reach Filopappou Hill, you may start the climb from the Apostle Paul street, (almost in the middle way between Thissio areaand the Acropolis Museum) pass by the picturesque church of St Demetrios Lumpardiaris and in a while find yourself in a fantastic city spot with direct view to the Acropolis Hill.
Ymittos, Penteli and Parnitha mountains
Athens’ 3 surrounding mountains offer an utterly breathtaking view of the whole town. If you are a fan of hiking, mountain biking, or just nature lovers, these are the right places for you and thankfully they are not a long drive away from the city centre.
Enjoy the view!
